Saturday we had a great time! There were 100 volunteers, a cake walk, BINGO, foot washing, instant to-go photos, a catered boxed lunch, clothing, toiletries, snacks, treats, and drinks! That was big, but the love, tears, thank you’s, and humility were much bigger.
Valley Assembly of God Church showed up with enough to make these people feel worthy and deserving, while BUTB provided the set up and platform. It still amazes me to watch others truly “get it” for the first time. That lump in their throats, that tear in their eyes and that shame in their voice.
One beautiful lady who volunteered said to me, “Thank you so much. This is so amazing! I’m so sorry I haven’t been down here to do this sooner.” As she cried with embarrassment her heart was flooded with a joy and humility that only God can bring.
I said “This is exactly what BUTB is about. Now you know why it’s called “Blessings” Under the Bridge!” Together we shoved blankets and clothes in bags for a man who was freezing.
I saw teenagers offering help and prayers. I saw joy as they played BINGO. Keepsake photos taken and given out. I saw smiles and compassion with out judgement or conditions. I saw friendships built and bridges gapped. What I saw was Jesus.
Christine Turner, who facilitated this with me, had a mission and a vision for this group. With the sun out today, my friend thank you for being the light, bringing the light, and showing the light to our friends under the bridge.
What a day and a reminder of how privileged we are to help someone in need.
